Google Earth is more than just an incredibly cool, and yes sometimes creepy, mapping tool.  Besides viewing the roof of your house, Google Earth can be used to take your students on engaging virtual field trips – sometimes referred to as Google Lit Trips.

What’s a Lit Trip?

Lit Trips enable students to actually visit the geographic locations of of characters in books.  Whether you teach primary grades or high school, books like Make Way for Ducklings or The Kite Runner make for excellent virtual experiences.

Is this Just for Reading?

No. What better way to introduce volcanoes in Science or Egypt in Social studies than by actually visiting Mount St. Hellen’s or the great pyramids of Giza?  Google Earth also includes a number of measuring tools in its toolbox.  Virtual field trips are for math too.
